In 1993, former Salisbury University student Julie Gellert collected folk material. She conducted a research on folk remedies. Her main informant was her grandmother who shared many cures used for generations in her family. Examples of these unconventional remedies are mustard plaster applied to the chest to cure a cold, heated salt plaster to soothe muscle pain or boiled tea bags to cure pink eye.
